Happy Diabetes Blog Day
I know I am a bit late in getting to the party, as far as online blogging goes, and even posting today, but I am at the party! And that is what counts!
Here is what is new in my Diabetes this week:
First - I saw my doc last week and she decided that since my bg numbers were not where they needed to be in the middle of the morning, I should increase my overnight basal and at the same time decrease my insulin to carb ration. Is it just me, or does that not many any sense?
Why would decreasing my insulin to carb ratio bring my bg down? Well, I have increased the o/n basal but I did not reduce the insulin to carb ratio. I have been doing this for a week now and I am still high in the mornings. Obviously something is not right! Back to the doc for advice.
Second - I have been on the pump a little over two months now and have been pretty good about writing down every piece of food that I put into my mouth. Unfortunately, I have not dropped a pound since beginning - but I haven't gained any either! So this week I have started counting the calories, as well as the carbs, of everything I eat. I am hoping this will give me some insight and point me towards things I can do to drop a little weight. Of course, the first obvious choice is to NEVER to go to McDonalds' for breakfast again. But that is my one weakness and I only go maybe once a week. Maybe it needs to be a once a month thing instead. Just something to think about.
Third - on the topic of weight loss, I need to start exercising more. I am taking yoga at least once a week, somethings twice but this just does not seem to be enough. I need to work some sort of cardio into my routine. My biggest problem is that I HATE gyms. I have got to figure out a way to get more cardio into my life without joining a gym. I am not a runner and am really bad at self motivating. I think I need to find a workout buddy in my area who has a similar schedule to me. Easy - right? Doutful!
Well, these are my issues today! But as I look at them, honestly, they are not really all that related to diabetes - at least two and three are not. However, they will ALL definitely be impacted by the disease! Well, another day, another challenge!
Happy Diabetes Blogging Day to all!!

It's funny the crazy things diabetes educators and endos ask us to do... I personally don't understand half of why they tell us to do what we do.
But they have the degree on the wall, so I suppose that means something... I hope.

Decreasing a ratio means making the difference between the numbers smaller, so decreasing your I:carb ratio means fewer carbs per unit of insulin. e.g if you were taking 1 unit to 15g try 1 unit to 12g. Believe me, it can have a huge impact on your control!

Hey there Maridee,
Another thing to look at is the type of carbs you're eating for breakfast. I've found that Joseph's sugars tend to spike mid-morning after he's had something with a low GI (read: something healthy!)or something with lots of fat (read: bacon!).
If decreasing your I:C doesn't do the trick, you might want to consider taking a combo bolus, for example, 60-70% up front with the remainder spread over 1-2 hours.
We've found that dealing with Joseph's spikes has been all about trial and error. And again, it can all change if his bg is on a downward or sharp upward trend when he gets up in the morning. Which makes me think-- is it possible you might be going low before waking, and a rebound could be contributing to the mid-morning high? If that's at all possible, you may want to set your alarm for 3 or 4am to see what your bg is doing a few hours before waking... Just a thought.
Sorry for the ramble. But I've been in problem-solving autopilot since Joseph's diagnosis. I just can't seem to stop.
Take care,
Sandra
